Artist Statement
I draw inspiration from my life as a new mother in a semi-rural beach town on the Mornington Peninsula, outside of Melbourne. Themes of fertility, motherhood, femininity, and nature have pervaded my work both before and after becoming a mother. This reflects my more general fascination with the intersection of that which is ordinary and that which is magnificent. Lately, I enjoy blurring the lines between what I know and don’t know—not trying too hard to shape my memories into decipherable images. Nature is more complicated than I understand, so I try to let go of the need to understand every move I make. I hope that the result is more similar to nature.
Theme: SCAPE
I am constantly taken aback by the beauty of the Mornington Peninsula. I did not grow up around farmed land or animals. I love watching the sheep, cows, and horses as I drive past. I find the scene utterly romantic, whether because of or in spite of the lack of human presence. Both the farmed or un-farmed lands have qualities that inspire me. I am often reminded of quilt work when I see sown crops, flattened by perspective, with perfect rows of colors and textures. This noticing finds its way into my art. There are moments when I place the oil pastels next to each other, and I feel as if I am sewing—sewing fabric or seeds.
