Artist Statement

Hannah Nowlan is a Victorian based artist working from a home studio in Black Rock and from her gallery in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Hannah's works explore the spirit of landscape through abstract forms, where shifting transparencies evoke a sense of transience and impermanence. Drawing from the physical and emotional weight of the land, Hannah's works often include celestial motifs and recurring symbols in layered compositions of land and water. These forms feel both ancient and fleeting, mirroring the cycles of time, memory, and transformation.

Theme: SCALE

Through fluid mark-making and transparent layering, my paintings become portals of place. While often deeply connected to site, the works evolve into imagined and mythical terrains—spaces that feel familiar yet untethered. Transparency acts as both a medium and a concept, allowing elements to emerge and dissolve, echoing the shifting nature of landscapes and the weighted histories they hold. In this way, my work seeks to preserve what is intangible: the essence of place, the echoes of personal and collective experience, and a spiritual feeling that shapes our connection to the land.
